Do I necessary to choose large frames for my bifocal eyeglasses?

I need to know if anyone here have much experience of buying bifocal eyeglasses, as I always love to wear smaller ones frames, however, I have the idea that a very narrow lens (top to bottom) may not allow enough space for the transition, do I necessary to choose large frames?And how about rimless eyeglasses frames for progressive lenses?
