Default What index optical lenses should I choose for my high prescription?

I have a prescription for -1000 for both eye, are higher indexes only better for cosmetic purposes? I don't really care about the looks, can i just order standard lenses? I know CR 39, 1.499, 1.599,1.67, and 1.74, which index lens is suitable for my prescription?

In my opinion, a thinner lens isn't only cosmetic, but also is better vision. Reducing the edge thickness will give you much less distortion as you move away from the center of the lens. Especially for rimless or half rim frames.
